The Child of Morella by AbigailLarson The Child of Morella by AbigailLarson
Morella's child from Poe's tale 'Morella." I can't believe this story doesn't get more credit. Demon lovers and their creepy offspring make for awesome bedtime reading!

On display at the Poe Museum of Richmond December 2010

I love how in the original story Morella spawns her child without any former indication that she was pregnant. XD

Wonderful! It's an often overlooked story, but it's one of my all-time favorites. Glad you like it!
i wrote a story about Demons once, and i couldn't help but name the Demon Princess Morella. that story still scares me, and i've read it at least five times.

Fantastic how you can clearly see the resemblance between this one and your portrait of Morella, yet she looks all beautiful and her child looks terribly creepy.

I am ashamed to say I've never read that story.

I know many people have never read it, which is a shame. It's pretty short, but it's absolutely one of his best.

Hmm, I don't remember this story. I thought that I had read all of them! Love the skeleton chair. Very spidery legs on the tables! :)

It's lovely
your work kind of remind me of my story Sweetness of Monster, but it's more like a fantasy one than a horror one.
Still, I love this story of Poe. Maybe I was unaware inspired

this was one of the first poe stories i read on my own (meaning without being assigned to) years ago, i loved it. Morella was one of poe's first feminist characters, apart from her, Ligia and the breifly mentioned ermagarde in "Eleonora" all of his leading ladies are symbols of beauty, purity and the tradgedy that is human:all things, even those which are most treaused and beautiful, will die. Morbid perhaps, but Morella was the first character to try and, bend the rules, per se, as Ligia later did in returning from the grave via possesion of her widower's new wife.
Lovely art, i wish i lived closer to richmond to see this gallery in person. But i do live between Baltimore and Phildelphia so i've been to those (and of course, the gravesite [twice]) :P
Many apologies for the lenghty literary bit there....

Whoa, Poe wrote about demons? Where have I been? Gonna go find that story right now...
AbigailLarson Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
Oh yes! It's a lovely, subtle story about a woman who dabbles in the Dark Arts and gives birth to a mysterious child... I hope you enjoy it! I believe it's available online for free :)
Assilem149 Featured By Owner Dec 9, 2010
oh wow... my friend and I wrote a story that sounds quite similar to that. Of course, it's nothing compared to anything Poe wrote! Definitely will read it when I get a chance.

I didn't know about this story either!! I'll read it as soon as possible :)

I love your style, out the ones you posted for the Poe Museum, this one is my favorite. I never heard of this story so now I must remove the dust from my copy of Poe stories. Sounds very interesting.
Hold the phone, a museum wants your artwork?! That's the sign that you have made it into the big time as an artist! Congrats!

Morella is one of my favorites, too. I agree, I'm surprised not more people know about it. Great job, it's like I pictured her.

Your style suits Poe's works so well. I especially love your interpretations of the characters and the scenes. I also want to thank you for making me pick up my Poe book again (all his works in one book), I did miss reading these. :}

You know what?.....I have to check my book to see if this story is in there because it doesn't sound familiar! And if my book doesn't have it then for shame on that book and I must seek it out!
