Well, I know many of you won't be able to attend my show tonight, so here's a preview!
For anyone near the Richmond, Virginia area, I'll be at Gallery 5 (200 W.Marshall Street, Richmond, VA 23220) all evening for the opening reception showcasing my latest series!
And for anyone interested, yes, there is a story behind the series. For some time, I've been re-envisioning the classic fairytale "Beauty and the Beast" under the guise of a twisted Victorian sideshow carnival. This series is to introduce all of the characters and their stories. It's a project that I'm now so deep into that I really don't have any choice but to see it through to the end - whatever that may be.
This piece in particular is the first image I sketched out as I was beginning to flesh out the plot and characters. Lavinia, an albino girl with the stage name of "The Porcelain Woman" was taken in by an elderly witch as an infant. She was nine when the witch met a timely demise, and Lavinia was left alone in the world until she came across Murdoch's traveling sideshow. Orrick, the monster, is the carnival's most recent employee. Grievously and mysteriously injured, he sought refuge with the other carnies after Lavinia patched him up and showed him that even though he was shunned by normal society, he could find acceptance with them. Last but not least is Nox, a strange demon-like creature who was acquired while the carnival was encamped for a show in Transylvania. Curious and pesky, Nox is fond of sneaking into the food carts and patron's pockets. He's lucky Orrick's hands are so happily occupied, however, or he'd find himself in quite a lot of trouble ^_~
More to come!
